In December 2018, when the family moved from Michigan to North Carolina, Corey discovered a large downed tree in their small woodlot. Upon cutting into the log, it became clear that the tree had either not been down for long or was remarkably resistant to decay. Although the species was not immediately identifiable, the wood was exceptionally dense and striking. Later, Corey identified the tree as Mockernut Hickory. He cut two sizable logs from it and stored them in the workshop while deciding how to use them. After acquiring his sawmill in 2021, these logs were among the first to be milled, following the milling of several sugar maple logs.
