Origin of the Specific Sugar Maple Wood Used

In the fall of 2022, a tree-trimming service, likely contracted by the county or power company, was cutting trees along the road. In some cases, they removed entire trees, while in others, they trimmed branches that posed potential threats to the road or powerlines. During this process, they cut down the top of a dying portion of a very old sugar maple tree at the end of the driveway leading to the workshop. Corey approached the crew and asked if they could leave the wood behind, and they gladly agreed.

Within a few days, Corey milled the large cutoffs into 2-inch live edge boards, which he then stacked in the workshop with PVC spacers. Since the wood had been dead for some time, it no longer held the typical moisture content of freshly cut timber, allowing it to be ready for use in under a year.

Based on measurements of the tree, it is estimated to have started growing sometime around the year 1800. Because only a portion of the tree was cut, the tree still stands alive to this day.
